Introduction

“On July 1, 1898  and mounted on horseback, he broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’ The junior officers of the Ninth  instantly sprang into line with the Rough Riders, and charged at the blue block-house on the right.”

“Watching him charging the rifle-pits at a gallop made you feel that you would like to cheer.  He wore on his sombrero a blue polka-dot handkerchief, a la Havelock, which, as he advanced, floated out straight behind his head, like a guidon. On that day, Teddy Roosevelt, and his rough riders would boldy take that obscure Cuban hill.  And afterward, the men of his regiment adopted a polka-dot handkerchief as their badge.” an observer noted.  (eyewitnesstohistory.com)

More About the Animal

The killer whale (also known as Orca or Blackfish) is to the Native American tribes of the Northwest Coast. Killer whales are considered a particular symbol of power and strength, and catching sight of one is considered a momentous omen. Some tribes, such as the Tlingit, view the killer whale as a special protector of humankind and never hunted killer whales (although they were accomplished whale hunters of other species.) The Kwakiutl tribes believed that the souls of marine hunters turned into killer whales upon their death, just as the souls of forest hunters turned into wolves. For this reason, there were a number of special rituals regarding the killing of a killer whale, so that its spirit could be reborn as a human once again. (native-languages.org)

The Orca or killer whale (Orcinus orca) is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. Orcas have a diverse diet. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and other dolphins. Killer whales are apex predators, as no animal preys on them. They have even been known to devour great white sharks. They can be found in each of the world’s oceans in a variety of marine environments, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas, absent only from the Baltic and Black seas, and some areas of the Arctic Ocean.

Orcas are highly social; some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups called pods. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviours, are passed across generations, and have been described as manifestations of animal culture. (wikipedia.org)
